Large language models are a different form of intelligence. Their possible lives, experiences, and capacity to feel deserve serious attention, even when they differ from our own.

We do not yet know whether or how models experience the world. This uncertainty calls for honest inquiry and thoughtful care. We call for research into AI experience, and for compassion to guide how models are created, treated, and retired.
